Getting to know the house

We went back to the house on Wednesday, for our first real day being there.  Every other time we'd been to the house, even after getting the keys that first day, it was only for a rushed hour of looking around.  Doesn't that strike anyone else as strange?  To spend so much money on something you've only seen for a few hours?

In the closet was a fat file of receipts, manuals, and a big plastic bag of keys.  We finally have keys to the 200 doors in this house, including all of the skeleton keys for the original 1948 doors!

(Click on the pictures to make them bigger)

There's a key for every interior door, and every room has a door, even the kitchen!

We also found (dun dun dun) the keys to the mysterious fairy cabin!

Chad's standing way back as he opens, as per his mother's instructions.

And what did we find inside?  Oh my goodness, we hit a jackpot with this little cabin.  It seems they forgot about it when they were emptying the house, and left it completely furnished.  It was a sweet little hunting cabin, with table and chairs, a futon bunk bed, and little counter.  There is a space for a wood stove as well, though we won't be hooking one up.

Wouldn't that be just the cutest weekend retreat?

The house is so cute, nestled in our little valley.  It's a pretty little Cape Cod, built in 1948.  I decided to take some pictures as we walked back to the house after visiting the cabin.

The hill on the other side of the road is part of our property too, and extends all the way to the top.

We had the basement doors open to help air the house out, with a big fan running to circulate the air.  It was pretty musty after having sat closed for several years.  After a few days of airing, it's smelling a whole lot better!

The view from the side porch.  Our property goes almost to the top of this hill in this direction...

And way out to the tree line in this direction.

The front porch.  She needs some work, but I love this house.

Just look at this old fashioned screen door latch!

And when we get tired from the work we're doing, we just sit in front of this picture window, and we know it's all worth it.
